Black Cherry
Black Cherry is a darker, richer take on the cherry note, evoking deep purple-red fruit, cherry liqueur and bitter almond. Built by the perfumer as an accord, it is a favourite in modern gourmand, amber and luxury fruity compositions, where it adds a seductive, boozy sweetness.
What does Black Cherry smell like?
Black cherry smells riper and heavier than red cherry: think of dark, almost black fruit with a thick syrupy juice, a kirsch-like alcoholic facet and a pronounced marzipan note from the stone. It is less tart and more jammy than morello cherry, with hints of plum and wine. In perfume it often has a slightly medicinal or cough-syrup edge, which perfumers either embrace for character or soften with vanilla and woods.
How perfumers create Black Cherry
Black cherry is built on the same almond-kernel foundation as other cherry notes, benzaldehyde and related aldehydes, but perfumers push it darker. Damascones and plum-type lactones add jammy depth, a liqueur or cognac accord brings the boozy side, and tonka bean, heliotropin or vanilla deepen the sweetness. Dark rose or a touch of patchouli can give it a wine-like shadow.

Black Cherry in perfume history
As a named perfume note, black cherry is essentially a twenty-first-century phenomenon. Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire (2012) helped popularise a black cherry and almond opening in a mainstream gourmand, and Tom Ford's Lost Cherry (2018) then built an entire luxury fragrance around black cherry, cherry liqueur and bitter almond, sparking imitations and a broader boozy-fruit trend.
Black Cherry in modern perfumery
Today black cherry is one of the defining notes of the "dark gourmand" style, used for evening scents, unisex niche fragrances and inexpensive alternatives to luxury originals. Perfumers often pair it with smoke, leather or oud to keep its sweetness grown-up.
How Black Cherry wears and what it pairs with
Black cherry is a heart note with real tenacity, especially when anchored by tonka or vanilla. It pairs well with almond, rose, tonka bean, Peru balsam, leather, oud, tobacco and cedar.
