Calypsone

Calypsone is a captive aroma molecule from Givaudan used to create fresh marine and watery effects. It smells ozonic and sea-breezy with a juicy watermelon facet and a light floral edge, and it is generally seen as a softer, more modern alternative to the classic aquatic molecule Calone.

What does Calypsone smell like?

Calypsone gives the impression of cool water and sea spray rather than seaweed or brine. Its main facets are ozonic freshness and a transparent, watery melon note, with some descriptions adding hints of citrus and lily-of-the-valley florality. Compared with Calone, which can feel sharp and metallic when overdosed, Calypsone is usually described as smoother and more natural, letting perfumers suggest the sea without the loud 1990s aquatic signature. It works as a special effect: a little adds air and moisture to a formula without dominating it.

Where Calypsone comes from

Calypsone is a fully synthetic molecule developed by Givaudan. Because it is a captive ingredient, it is reserved for the company's own perfumers and its exact structure is not widely published in consumer-facing sources.

Calypsone in perfume history

Calypsone belongs to the wave of marine molecules that followed the aquatic boom of the 1990s, when fragrance houses looked for sea notes that felt less dated than Calone. Givaudan launched it in the late 2000s, and it soon began to appear in niche compositions such as Etat Libre d'Orange's Hermann à mes Côtés me Paraissait une Ombre (2015), a mineral, cold-air fragrance.

Calypsone in modern perfumery

Calypsone has since moved into designer perfumery. When Kenzo reinvented Kenzo Homme in 2022, perfumer Quentin Bisch included it to give the woody-marine scent an extra aquatic dimension. Its popularity reflects a broader return of watery and mineral freshness, reworked with more subtlety than the first marine wave.

How Calypsone wears and what it pairs with

It shows up mostly in the opening and heart, lending a cool, moist brightness that fades into the base. It pairs well with citrus, sea salt accords, lily and white flowers, sage, vetiver, cedar, ambery woods and clean musks.
