Cypress
Cypress is a fresh, resinous green-woody note distilled from the needles and twigs of the Mediterranean cypress, Cupressus sempervirens. Crisper and more aromatic than cedar, with a clean, slightly smoky pine-like character, it is a classic ingredient in colognes, fougères and dry woody fragrances.
What does Cypress smell like?
Cypress oil opens with a bracing, coniferous freshness reminiscent of pine and juniper, then settles into a dry, resinous woodiness with a subtle smoky, leathery and ambery undertone. It feels cool and green rather than sweet. Compared with pine, it is less sharp and turpentine-like; compared with cedar, it is greener, airier and less pencil-shaving. The best oils also carry a soft balsamic warmth that helps them last longer than most conifer notes. Fragrances that name the Italian cypress usually push its sun-warmed Mediterranean side, surrounding it with fig leaf, citrus and herbs.
Where Cypress comes from
The tree is native to the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia but has been planted across Italy for so long that it has become a symbol of the country, especially Tuscany and Umbria. The oil is steam-distilled from fresh leafy twigs, sometimes with cones, mostly in France, Spain and Morocco rather than Italy, so "Italian cypress" on a perfume usually refers to the species and the image, not the oil's origin. A cypress absolute and a heavier "cypress concrete" are also made in small quantities for fine fragrance.

Cypress in perfume history
The cypress has been a symbol across the Mediterranean since antiquity, associated with mourning, permanence and sacred spaces; its Latin name sempervirens means "always living", and its durable, fragrant timber was prized for doors, chests and temple fittings. In perfumery it entered through the aromatic tradition of eaux de Cologne and fougères, where its green, woody freshness complemented lavender and citrus. The chypre family takes its name from the French word for Cyprus, not from the cypress tree, although cypress oil does appear in some chypre compositions.
Cypress in modern perfumery
Cypress is enjoying renewed interest as brands move towards dry, green and "forest" fragrances and away from sugary sweetness. It features in niche perfumes built around Mediterranean landscapes, from Tuscan gardens to Amalfi coast summers, and in masculine aromatic scents, often alongside vetiver and incense. Its alpha-pinene-rich profile makes it relatively easy to reconstruct, but natural oil gives more depth and a smoky nuance.
How Cypress wears and what it pairs with
Cypress usually works in the top and heart, lending freshness at first and then a dry woody structure, with moderate longevity. It pairs well with bergamot, lemon, fig leaf, juniper, lavender, clary sage, labdanum, vetiver and incense.
Safety and regulation
Cypress oil naturally contains limonene, one of the fragrance allergens that must be declared on EU cosmetic labels above set thresholds.
