Gin
Gin in perfume is an accord that recreates the aroma of the juniper-flavoured spirit, built mainly around juniper berry. It belongs to the aromatic family and smells crisp, resinous and piney, with citrus peel and a dry, spicy freshness, and it is used to give fragrances a sharp, clean opening.
What does Gin smell like?
A gin note captures the botanicals of the spirit rather than alcohol. Juniper berry dominates, with a bright, piney, slightly peppery resin note. Coriander seed adds a spicy, floral warmth, angelica root brings an earthy muskiness, and lemon or orange peel adds sparkle. Some perfumers add cucumber, rose, cardamom or tonic-like bitter citrus. Compared with a pure juniper note, gin is broader and more cocktail-like; compared with vodka or other white spirit accords, it is far more aromatic.
How perfumers create Gin
Perfumers blend juniper berry oil (Juniperus communis) with coriander, angelica, citrus oils and cardamom, then use aldehydes or fresh synthetic notes to suggest an icy, effervescent lift. Tonic-style versions add grapefruit, lime and quinine-like bitterness.

Gin in perfume history
Gin grew from the Dutch spirit jenever and became hugely popular in eighteenth-century London. As a named fragrance note it is mostly a twenty-first century idea, part of a wider trend for cocktail-inspired perfumes. Penhaligon's Juniper Sling (2011), created by Olivier Cresp, is often cited as a key example.
Gin in modern perfumery
Gin accords appear in fresh masculines, unisex colognes and niche lines themed around bars and spirits. They are popular in summer scents and in brands that use drinks as a creative reference. The note is about aroma and atmosphere, not the drink itself.
How Gin wears and what it pairs with
Gin is a top-to-heart accord that is bright at first and settles into a dry, woody trail. Classic pairings include lime, grapefruit, cucumber, rose, cardamom, vetiver, orris and cedar.
