Mango
Mango is a lush, tropical fruit note with a sweet, juicy flesh and a resinous, slightly turpentine-like edge, used in fruity, floral and summery perfumes. Built by the perfumer as an accord, it evokes ripe mango and brings a sun-drenched, exotic richness to a composition.
What does Mango smell like?
Ripe mango smells creamy and honeyed, with peach- and apricot-like sweetness, a hint of citrus and a green, resinous facet that recalls pine sap or turpentine. That piney edge comes from terpenes such as delta-3-carene and helps distinguish mango from other tropical fruits. Compared with pineapple it is less sharp and more custardy; compared with peach it is heavier, more tropical and slightly spicy.
How perfumers create Mango
A mango accord combines lactones such as gamma-decalactone for creamy, peachy flesh, fruity esters for juice and terpenes for the resinous, green bite. Sulphur compounds are used in tiny quantities to add realism, as they are in blackcurrant and grapefruit. Citrus and blackcurrant bases often brighten the effect.

Mango in perfume history
The mango originated in South Asia, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years and holds deep cultural meaning, and India remains by far the largest producer. As a perfume note, it is modern, rising with the tropical and fruity trends of the 1990s and 2000s. Hermès' Un Jardin sur le Nil (2005), by Jean-Claude Ellena, famously centred on green mango, making the note feel refined rather than holiday-like.
Mango in modern perfumery
Mango now appears in summer flankers, tropical niche scents and fresh fruity-florals. Perfumers increasingly prefer green, unripe mango for its tart, leafy freshness, while ripe mango features in sweeter, gourmand tropical blends.
How Mango wears and what it pairs with
Mango is a top-to-heart note with a juicy opening and a soft, warm fade. It pairs well with grapefruit, lotus, coconut, jasmine, frangipani, blackcurrant, vetiver and sandalwood.
