Mignonette
Mignonette is a green, sweet floral note inspired by Reseda odorata, a small garden plant once loved for its fragrant flower spikes. It smells of green leaves, violet and fruity, slightly spicy sweetness, and today it is recreated as an accord because the natural oil is no longer produced.
What does Mignonette smell like?
Mignonette has a delicate, green-floral scent: fresh and leafy, with a sweet violet-like note, a hint of raspberry and a slightly spicy, almost peppery edge. It is subtle rather than showy, and its character is said to become clearest when diluted. Compared with violet, it is greener and less powdery; compared with galbanum or violet leaf, it is softer and sweeter.
Where Mignonette comes from
The plant is native to the eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, and several cultivars were once grown for their oil. Extraction was always difficult: steam distillation gave only tiny yields, and even solvent-extracted absolute was produced in small amounts. Natural mignonette oil was used in some fine perfumes in the early 20th century but has since disappeared from commercial production.

Mignonette in perfume history
Mignonette became fashionable in France and England in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was grown in pots and window boxes for its scent. Its French name means little darling. Perfumers valued its green-floral character, and it appeared in some early 20th-century perfumes, although high costs and low yields limited its use.
Mignonette in modern perfumery
Mignonette is now a rare, nostalgic note, mostly found in niche fragrances that evoke vintage gardens or old-fashioned florals. Perfumers build it from green and violet materials, and its subtle profile makes it an interesting accent in green florals and chypres.
How Mignonette wears and what it pairs with
Mignonette is a heart note with a fresh, green opening and moderate longevity. It pairs with violet, violet leaf, iris, rose, galbanum, green tea, hay and light woods.
