Mystikal

Mystikal is a captive aroma chemical from Givaudan used to create incense effects in perfume. It smells resinous and smoky, like burning frankincense in a stone church, but with a brighter, slightly waxy and aldehydic sparkle, and it lets perfumers suggest incense without relying only on natural resins.

What does Mystikal smell like?

Mystikal gives the impression of incense smoke rather than raw resin. Its main facets are church-like frankincense and a hint of myrrh, lifted by a clean, waxy brightness that recalls some aldehydes, with softer powdery nuances that are sometimes compared to orris and ambrette seed. Compared with frankincense essential oil, which is dominated by fresh, peppery, lemony terpenes, Mystikal emphasises the warm, dusty, burnt side of incense that is hard to capture with natural materials alone.

Where Mystikal comes from

Mystikal is made by chemical synthesis and is a Givaudan captive. It is widely reported to be a carboxylic acid related to the aldehyde C-12 MNA, which would make it chemically akin to the olibanic acids that researchers identified in 2016 as key contributors to frankincense's old-church smell.

Mystikal in perfume history

Perfumers long struggled to reproduce the smell of burning frankincense, because the most characteristic aroma compounds are present in tiny amounts and were identified only recently. Mystikal was developed by Givaudan in the late 2000s as a way to bring that effect into a formula in a controlled, stable form. Its name has become familiar to fragrance fans through note lists from niche brands that name their raw materials.

Mystikal in modern perfumery

Mystikal is used by Givaudan perfumers in incense, amber and woody compositions, often to extend or modernise the smoke of natural olibanum. Niche brands that publish their ingredient lists have made the name familiar, and it is also used in small doses to give florals and skin scents a luminous, faintly sacred feel.

How Mystikal wears and what it pairs with

It sits in the heart and base, giving a lasting, dry incense trail. It pairs with frankincense, myrrh, elemi, labdanum, iris, ambrette, cedar, vetiver and soft musks.
