Olibanum
Frankincense is the aromatic gum resin of Boswellia trees from Arabia, the Horn of Africa and India, known in perfumery as olibanum. An amber (resinous) note, it smells lemony, peppery and pine-like over a dry, smoky, balsamic core, bringing light and depth to incense, woody and ambery perfumes.
What does Frankincense smell like?
The distilled oil opens with a sparkling citrus brightness laced with pine needles and pepper, then dries to a clean, faintly smoky resin. It is airier than bitter, earthy myrrh and far less sweet than benzoin. Each species has its own accent. Omani Boswellia sacra is valued for an elegant, lemon-fresh profile; Somali B. carterii often leans towards pine; B. papyrifera from Ethiopia and Sudan carries a distinctive fruity note from octyl acetate; and Indian B. serrata is sharper and more turpentine-like.
Where Frankincense comes from
Tappers cut shallow incisions into the bark, and the milky sap hardens into pale tears that are gathered by hand weeks later. Roughly 90% of global production now comes from the Horn of Africa, much of it from wild trees.

Frankincense in perfume history
Traded for more than 5,000 years, frankincense fuelled the caravan routes of southern Arabia, was burned in temples from Egypt to Rome and, in the Gospel of Matthew, is one of the gifts of the Magi. The English name comes from Old French franc encens, true or high-quality incense, while olibanum is a Medieval Latin term often linked to the Arabic al-lubān, after the milky sap. Oman's frankincense sites in Dhofar are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In modern perfumery, Amouage built its first fragrances around Omani frankincense in 1983.
Frankincense in modern perfumery
Olibanum is one of the best-loved naturals in niche perfumery and a quiet support in many mainstream woody fragrances. Supply is under pressure, because heavily tapped trees produce far fewer viable seeds and grazing, fire and beetles add to the strain. A 2019 study predicted that B. papyrifera populations could halve within two decades, prompting traceable and community-based sourcing programmes.
How Frankincense wears and what it pairs with
The citrus-pine top fades within an hour, leaving a resinous heart and a soft, smoky base. Natural partners include myrrh, labdanum, rose, iris, pink pepper, bergamot, vetiver and cedar.

Safety and regulation
Frankincense oil contains limonene, an EU-declarable allergen whose oxidation products can sensitise skin, so the oil is stabilised and used within standard limits.
