Ozonic notes
Ozonic notes are fresh, airy accords that suggest clean, charged air: the atmosphere before a thunderstorm, sheets dried on a windy line or a cold breeze on a mountain top. Built from synthetic molecules, they belong to the fresh family and smell crisp, bright and slightly metallic, giving fragrances a sense of space and lightness rather than wetness.
What do Ozonic notes smell like?
Ozonic notes smell of air rather than water. They are dry, cool and sparkling, with a green, faintly floral lift, a clean laundry quality and sometimes a sharp, electric edge. Real ozone gas is pungent and chlorine-like and would be unpleasant in a perfume, so ozonic accords capture only the pleasant impression of fresh air. The key difference from Aquatic notes is texture: aquatics feel wet, melon-like or marine, whereas ozonic notes feel dry, wind-blown and transparent.
How perfumers create Ozonic notes
Perfumers use a handful of synthetic aldehydes with airy, green-floral profiles. Helional is a cornerstone; one of its mirror-image forms is notably ozonic and green, while the other is sweeter and more lily-like. Floralozone adds a bright ozonic note with an anisic twist and bridges marine and floral materials. Cyclamen aldehyde, aldehydes such as C-10 and C-12, dihydromyrcenol and small amounts of Calone are also common.

Ozonic notes in perfume history
Ozone was identified in the mid-nineteenth century by the chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein, who named it after the Greek word for smell because of the sharp odour around electrical discharges. Its association with lightning helped give it a reputation for freshness. In perfumery, ozonic accords emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s alongside the aquatic boom, as new aldehydes let perfumers suggest clean air and open sky.
Ozonic notes in modern perfumery
Ozonic notes are widely used in mainstream fresh fragrances, sports scents and laundry and home products. In niche perfumery they appear more subtly, adding lift to florals and woods or evoking storms, altitude and cold weather.
How Ozonic notes wear and what they pair with
Ozonic notes are top-to-heart notes that give a bright, diffusive opening and fade into musk. They pair with bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, violet leaf, lily of the valley, mint, white musk and cedar.
