Peony
Peony is a fresh, rosy floral note inspired by the lavish blooms of the Paeonia plant. It smells of sheer rose, green leaves and a hint of fruit, and because the flower yields no usable extract, every peony in perfume is an accord created by the perfumer.
What does Peony smell like?
Peony smells fresh before it smells sweet. The impression is of a light, airy rose with a crisp, green, slightly papery quality, often compared to apple skin or clean linen, and a watery, dewy lift. Compared with rose, it is less honeyed and less spicy; compared with freesia, it is rounder and more rosy. Different perfumers push it towards fruity (lychee, raspberry), powdery or fresh-green interpretations.
How perfumers create Peony
Peony is classed as a mute flower: its scent molecules are too scarce and fragile to survive steam distillation, and no commercial extract exists. Perfumers build it from rose alcohols such as citronellol, geraniol and phenylethyl alcohol, add brightness with linalool and dewiness with cyclamen aldehyde, and often use Paeonile, a synthetic molecule with a rosy, green, slightly metallic peony effect. Fruity notes like lychee are common supporting players.

Peony in perfume history
Peonies have been cultivated in China for well over a thousand years, where they are known as the king of flowers and symbolise wealth and honour. In Western perfumery the note is recent, since it only became possible to reproduce it convincingly with modern aroma chemicals. It began to appear on fragrance pyramids in the late 20th century and became a defining note of fresh, feminine florals in the 2000s.
Peony in modern perfumery
Peony is one of the most popular floral notes of the last two decades, a mainstay of fresh rose fragrances, body mists and home scents. Its appeal lies in its clean, uplifting character and its romantic image, and because it is entirely synthetic it is affordable and consistent. Perfumers increasingly pair it with suede, musk and woods to give it more depth.
How Peony wears and what it pairs with
Peony is a heart note with a bright, diffusive opening and moderate longevity. It pairs with rose, lychee, pink pepper, freesia, magnolia, suede, white musk and pear.
