Rum

Rum in perfume is a warm, boozy note that recreates the aroma of the spirit distilled from sugar cane products. Usually an accord, sometimes supported by a rum extract, it belongs to the gourmand-ambery family and smells sweet, molasses-rich and slightly fruity, with a warm, woody glow.

What does Rum smell like?

A rum note smells of brown sugar and molasses with a fruity, banana-like ester lift, a hint of caramel and a warm, oaky finish. Dark rum accords are heavier and more spiced, while white rum notes are fresher and sweeter. Esters such as ethyl butyrate and ethyl acetate create the boozy sparkle, and vanillin, coumarin and woods add the barrel-aged depth. Compared with cognac, rum is sweeter and more sugary; compared with whisky, it is less smoky.

How perfumers create Rum

Perfumers combine fruity esters, sugary and caramel notes (such as ethyl maltol), vanillin and tonka, plus warm spices and woods. A rum absolute or tincture made from real spirit can add authenticity. Rum ether, a flavour material, is sometimes used for a punchy boozy opening.

Rum in perfume history

Rum developed on the sugar plantations of the Caribbean in the seventeenth century. As a perfume note it rose with the fashion for gourmand and boozy scents in the 2000s. Kilian's Straight to Heaven (2007) and Maison Margiela's Replica Jazz Club (2013) are often cited as influential rum-accented fragrances.

Rum in modern perfumery

Rum appears widely in ambery, gourmand and woody fragrances, especially in autumn and winter releases. It adds warmth and a sense of indulgence and is often paired with tobacco and vanilla. The note refers only to scent.

How Rum wears and what it pairs with

Rum is usually a heart note that melts into a warm base. It gives a sweet, fruity richness to woods and resins. Classic pairings include vanilla, tobacco, tonka, cinnamon, patchouli, cedar, leather and benzoin.
