Yellow Mandarin

Yellow Mandarin is Italian mandarin oil pressed from mid-season fruit, harvested as the peel changes from green to yellow-orange. A citrus note, it sits between the sharp green grade and the rich red grade, offering a balanced, lightly sweet and juicy mandarin with a clean zest.

What does Yellow Mandarin smell like?

Yellow mandarin smells like the fruit at the moment it becomes pleasant to eat: fresh and tangy, but with the sweetness starting to come through. The mandarin's signature facets, a faint musky warmth and a floral, grape-like nuance, are clearer than in green oil but not yet as jammy as in red. Perfumers often find it the most versatile of the three grades, because it gives recognisable mandarin without tipping into either sourness or candy.

Where Yellow Mandarin comes from

The yellow grade comes from fruit picked roughly in November and December, mainly in Calabria and Sicily. Juice yields are higher than for green fruit, so the grade is more plentiful and usually less expensive. The oil has a golden-yellow colour.

Yellow Mandarin in perfume history

Yellow mandarin has no separate history of its own; it is simply one tier in the harvest-based grading that Italian citrus processors adopted to give buyers predictable oils across a long picking season. Its story is part of the wider history of Italian mandarin in cologne-making.

Yellow Mandarin in modern perfumery

The yellow grade is rarely named on a perfume's note list, but it is widely used behind the scenes as a reliable, all-round mandarin. When a brand does specify it, the aim is usually to signal a natural, sunny mandarin that is neither sharp nor sugary.

How Yellow Mandarin wears and what it pairs with

Like all mandarin oils it is a top note that lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, softening the transition into the heart. It pairs with bergamot, neroli, orange blossom, jasmine, cardamom, vanilla and pale woods.

Safety and regulation

Limonene is an EU-declarable allergen. Mandarin peel oil is not usually counted among the strongly phototoxic citrus oils.
